Facebook has shut down 5.8 billion of zombie accounts in 2020. The Crime Prevention Research Center has found out that zombie accounts appeared in some Taiwanese politicians’ Facebook fan pages. The zombie accounts try to interfere with the presidential election by spreading misinformation on social media platforms. Nevertheless, a zombie account is just one type of the impostor accounts, the other types of accounts also have raised researchers’ awareness. Spreading misinformation has become a new type of cybercrime, a trend in the society, and a huge threat to national security. The Crime Prevention Research Center has started the research on the data of web crawlers during Taiwan’s 2020 presidential election and COVID-19 pandemic by examining the distribution of popular Facebook posts about the presidential election. The research was first published back in last December, 2020, and the research center also announced the research results during the Ministry of Justice conference on March 24th, 2021.
