The Academy Welcomed Professor Jianlin Chen from the Melbourne Law School to Deliver a Special Lecture on Jan. 15, 2025

On January 15, 2025, the Academy for the Judiciary invited Professor Jianlin Chen, Associate Dean of the Melbourne Law School in Australia, to lecture and engage in academic exchange with the 65th Class of the Judicial Education Program trainees. Professor Chen obtained his LL.M. and J.S.D. from the University of Chicago and held an academic position at the University of Hong Kong. In 2017, he joined the faculty at Melbourne Law School. His research areas include law and religion, criminal law, comparative law, and legal economic analysis.
The topic of his lecture was "Punishing Passengers for the Driver’s Drunk Driving: A Case Study of Strict Liability and Collective Punishment in Taiwan." Professor Chen discussed the current legal provisions in Taiwan regarding administrative penalties for passengers in vehicles with drunk drivers, observing how courts interpret and apply these laws in specific cases. He also expanded his analysis to include the political context of the legislative process in the Taiwanese Parliament. Throughout the discussion, he provided detailed and insightful responses to the participants' questions, presenting his research findings in an accessible way that allowed the participants to gain a deep understanding of the topic in a limited amount of time, leaving them greatly inspired.
