Inviting NCCU professors of law Hsu Heng-da and Wang Hsiao-tan as keynote speakers, the 11th seminar of judicial reform on “News Reporting and Fair Trial” was held by the Academy on December 9, 2016 for discussion on the issue of unfair trial resulted from news reporting. Speaking from the perspectives of social functions of the media and the influence on fair trial, Professor Hsu Heng-da explored improper collection of evidence, improper influence over legal proceedings, and inappropriate criticism of the outcome of a trial by the media that exist in society today, providing a full review as well as suggestions. Moreover, Professor Wang Hsiao-tan spoke on the topic of “From Trust in the Judiciary to Understanding Differences” and discussed how to reduce the influence of media reports on trials to avoid unfair trials due to media reports following lay participation in criminal trials. In addition, President of Taiwan Keelung District Court Tsai Ming-yao and Prosecutor Chu Chao-liang of Supreme Prosecutors Office were also specially invited as discussants to give their responses from the court and prosecutorial perspectives, as well as exchanging opinions with seminar participants.
