Senior law advisor Mr. Herman Benjamin van Heerden of the International Legal Relations Directorate of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development Republic of South Africa and his wife visited the Academy on December 6, 2017 with Deputy Director Ms. Meng Yu-mei of the Department of International and Cross-Strait Legal Affairs of the Ministry of Justice, Taiwan. Received by AJMJ President Tsai Pi-Yu, along with the Academy’s Chief Secretary, Chief of the Academic Affairs Department, and Chief of the Student Affairs Department, the guests visited the Academy’s hardware and software facilities and observed classes taking place at the Academy. They were also introduced to issues such as Taiwan’s training and recruitment of judicial officials and the on-the-job training for prosecutors and pre-job training for judicial professionals at AJMJ. Mr. Heerden was impressed with AJMJ for providing a sound and complete educational environment for the cultivation of judicial talent in Taiwan. During the exchange, both parties interacted well and Mr. Heerden also briefly introduced the South African judicial system, recruitment of judges and prosecutors and the nation’s organization responsible for judicial training. As Taiwan and the Liaison Office of South Africa in Taiwan signed a Cooperation Arrangement in the Legal Field for the exchange of ideas and training between the judicial educational institutes of both parties, Mr. Heerden enthusiastically invited AJMJ to form a delegation to visit and offer training at the South African Justice College to deepen mutual understanding on the judicial systems of both parties, which would be a delightful fulfillment of the exchange of training between the judicial educational institutes as specified in the Agreement. President Tsai said she would be glad to see the proposal become a reality and earnestly looked forward to receiving the judicial professionals of South Africa again in the future.
