In 2017, the AJMJ Crime Prevention Research Center has commissioned 2 research projects, “Characteristics and Prevention Strategies of Stranger Violence (including indiscriminate killing)” and “2016 Crime Situations and Analyses”, to National Taipei University and Central Police University respectively while the Center also carried out 2 in-house researches on “Public Satisfaction with Prosecutors Offices and Feelings of Social Safety” and “Efficiency of Taiwanese Parole System”. The results of these 4 researches have been presented in the symposium of the 2017 Crime Prevention Research on December 8. Additionally, to encourage more talents to join the research field of crime prevention, the Academy set up the Outstanding Thesis Award on Crime Prevention Research and has held the awarding ceremony for 4 consecutive years. 20 students with a Master or Ph.D. degree won the award this year. What is more, to facilitate communication between the judicial authorities and the public, help people better understand crime prevention and create more legal education materials, a writing contest for legal short fiction was held this year and 10 winners were chosen. In the symposium, President Tsai Pi-Yu delivered an opening speech and presided over the group discussion while Minister Chiu Tai-san of Ministry of Justice gave a speech and presented the awards to winners. In the speech, Minister Chiu stated that to live safely is the basic requirement of the public on the government as each crime creates serious impact on victims’ daily life. Therefore, the government is obligated to find out causes and strategies for crime. In addition, in order to assist continuous development and promotion of academic researches, the Outstanding Thesis Award and writing contest for legal short fiction were held. Winners were selected through fierce competition and hoped they would continue to put more efforts in crime prevention to make our society more harmonious and peaceful.
