The 14th seminar of judicial reform on “Reform and Complementary Measures of Lay Participation in Trials” was held by the Academy on February 7, 2017. Currently, getting people involved in trial proceedings and increasing the public’s trust in the judiciary system are global trends in judicial reform. Professor Zhang Li-qing from the Department of Economic and Financial Law, National University of Kaohsiung and Professor Zhang Ming-wei from the School of Law, Fu Jen Catholic University were invited to be keynote speakers. The different systems for lay participation in trials and their complementary measures were discussed extensively in the seminar. In addition, Counselor Chen Rui-ren of the Ministry of Justice and Judge Wu Qiu-hong of the Taiwan High Court were also invited to participate in the discussion. During the seminar, speakers and discussants exchanged opinions with participating judges and prosecutors on the various systems and complementary measures for lay participation in trials. The seminar ended successfully.
