President Tsai Pi-yu and Instructor Liao Hui-ru of the Academy for the Judiciary visited Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland between October 14 and 23, 2016, inspecting the two countries’ judicial training institutions (Courts of Sweden Judicial Training Academy and Prosecutor Academy of Finland) , adjudicative organs (Supreme Court of Sweden, District Court of Södertörn, Sweden, and Supreme Court of Finland), academic and educational authorities (Department of Criminology, Stockholm University, Faculty of Law, Helsinki University, and Ministry of Education and Culture, Finland) and correctional facilities (Norrtälje prison in Sweden and Helsinki Prison in Finland) respectively to gain an understanding of their system planning and actual operation, in order to build friendship. Furthermore, the feasibility of a prosecutor exchange program and an academic exchange program was also discussed during the visit. It was hoped that the Academy would be able to develop an international perspective from this trip, learning from others, to explore more efficient, more suitable, globally-connected courses and teaching methods, as well as to increase the effectiveness of the Academy’s investigation, analysis and research concerning criminal policy, to promote judicial excellence.
