To find out the crime trend in Taiwan, the Academy for the Judiciary commissioned National Taipei University to conduct an analysis of 2013 crime patterns. On December 9, 2014, the symposium and media conference were held and hundreds of scholars and practitioners attended to learn about the changes of domestic criminal patterns.
The symposium was hosted by President Lin Huei-huang. Minister Luo Ying-xue of Ministry of Justice, who presented the award to winners of the 1st AJMJ Outstanding Thesis on Crime Prevention, and Deputy Commissioner Yang Yuan-ming of Criminal Investigation Bureau of National Police Agency were invited to deliver remarks.
The research indicates that traditional property crimes are on a downward slide while offences of endangering public safety and drug crime show an upward trend; the number and rate of senior offenders rise; the percentage of non-prosecution appears high. It suggested that Ministry of Justice may target an overhaul of the penalty for misdemeanors and diversion programs.
